Through a lush valley to a medieval bridge - 14.5 km walking route
Platy valley is one of the jewels of Cyprus nature that still exist (which hopefully will be protected and preserved for generations to come). We offer different walking routes that combine Platy Valley with the nearby Kelephos medieval bridge.
In the version that we present here, initially walkers descend on a dirt road on a slope of a forested mountain, with the vegetation dominated by pines. When walkers enter the valley and approach the stream, after a few kilometers, the scenery and vegetation change significantly.
Winter walks here have the advantage of more water in the stream and fewer cars in the valley. On the other hand, towards summer Platy valley becomes lush, which compensates for the decrease in the stream flow and the relative traffic. Platy Valley is a serene place, with a stream that has water all year round. There is a plethora of local plant species, dominated by plane and alder trees, around the riverbed. One can also see pines, bracken, storax, maple, even figs. In early autumn Cyclamen bloom here. Lucky travellers may spot crabs walking on the road or the elusive protected moufflon. Unfortunately they are likely to meet a few cars using this road (especially during the hot season). Nearly six km from the start, one passes by Komitidjis picnic site.
The scenery changes considerably with the season (as most valley trees are deciduous).
According to legend, the last part (trail) of the route was used by camel caravans in medieval times. It passes via Kelephos medieval Venetian bridge, where the walk ends. It is probably the most photographed of the medieval bridges of Cyprus, and a lovely spot to visit year round (some times water runs out in August).
Cyprus Walks Etc offers standard guided walking trips in Platy Valley ( (one can book under Day Trips from Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa, Protaras) as well as customisable guided walking trips (in all cases usually entering from the downstream end). At the same time we offer self-guided walking trips, from a number of villages on Troodos, that mainly include GPS information about the routes and relevant transportation. The route is interesting year round, especially for those longing to walk in a lush environment during the warmer season, and/or would like the therapeutic experience of walking next to running water for many kilometers. For many people the walk is fine also during July and August, as the main part of it would be under the shade of trees. You are welcomed to book with us.
