On the Laona Plateau - vistas and traditional stone-built villages - 9 km walking route
This is a relatively short walking route for those who want to get to know on foot many of the attractions on Laona Plateau, a beautiful part of Cyprus. The plateau sits largely at an elevation of 600 meters, and offers vistas at places to the west coast of Akamas and to the bay of Chrysochou.
The walking route connects four well preserved stone-built villages on the Laona Plateay, providing opportunities to see local traditional village architecture, possibly try Cyprus coffee at a number of villages, and visit a number of museums, including the Sea Turtle Museum in Inia village, the Knighst museum and the Geological museum in Pano Arodes village, and the Akamas Information center in Kathikas village. The route also passes by a winery near Kathikas village.
The walk finishes at Kathikas village, home to many restaurants on the island, that provides the opportunity for a well-deserved Cyprus village lunch, after the day's walk.
The walk can be great year round, showcasing the change of seasons, from green fields and wildflowers in winter and much of spring, to golder colours and some vineyards in bloom in summer, and more earthy colours in winter. As it is not very long at 9 km long and relatively flat, it would be fine for many people to walk even during hot summer, provided that they start early.
Cyprus Walks Etc offers self-guided walking trips, from Latchi and from Paphos, that mainly include GPS information about the routes and relevant transportation. The route is excellent year round, for its vistas and its cultural component (visiting four well preserved stone-built villages, museums, a winery, village restaurants. During the hot season because it is relatively short (and the elevation is not low, thus it is cooler) it could be fine to walk for many people, provided one starts early.
