While the island's steep economic development of the late 20th and 21st century has seen the construction of modern, in many respects characterless neighbourhoods in its cities and many plain villages, the lowland still has charming quarters, and attractions going back hundreds or thousands of years (eg Unesco World Heritage ancient Paphos, Walled Nicosia, Walled Famagusta, the quarter around Limassol castle, Kolossi castle, Larnaca old center, Panagia Angeloktisti church and more).
Going to higher elevation, and especially to less easily accessed places on the island, takes travellers back in time. Many stone-built villages decorate the mountains (the Wine villages of Limassol, eg Omodos and Vouni, the Laona villages close to Akamas eg Droushia and Kathikas, the Lefkaritika lace producing villages, eg Pano Lefkara, the villages in the valleys on the north slope of Troodos mountains, eg Kakopetria, Kalopanagiotis, and many more).
Watermills, medieval chapels, medieval bridges are found around our Cyprus, many off the beaten track. So us hundreds of natural monuments (ancient trees) and a number of waterfalls.
A visit to one of the hundred or so wineries on the island for winetasting (especially of wines produced using indigenous varieties of grapes) as well as a Cyprus meal at a traditional village restaurant are also highly recommended.
