11.5 km kayaking route along the Akamas north coast
The Akamas peninsula is one of the jewels of Cyprus nature, a protected area with mountains and unspoilt coastline at the north west tip of Cyprus. The west (Lara coast) is about 30 kilometers long, very remote and relatively flat near the coast. Much of the west coast, from two km north of Agios Georgios tis Peyeias port until the north end of South Lara beach is primarily sandy. Further north, mainly except for the 1 km long North Lara beach, becomes rocky, decorated by rock formations and some caves. Further north it becomes more rugged, with higher hills closer to the sea. During the hot season (April to October) in the last few years, approaching near the two Lara beaches on any watercraft (including kayaks) is forbidden, in the state's effort to protect the sea turtle population in the area.
The Akamas north coast could be divided into two parts with significantly different characteristics. From Ammoudi beach in the west until 'Photiades beach' a stretch of about 7 km, the rocky coast is rather flat and limestone based. There are a number of beaches or bays like Ammoudi, Fontana Amoroza, Blue Lagoon, Manolis, Amphitheater and Koufotrypis. From Photiades beach eastwards, the scenery changes dramatically. Geologically one finds other rock strata here and colours like blue, grey, green, red and brown. There are cliffs come rising to nearly 300 meters and no easy access from a road or trail for many kilometers.
The combination of two different types of coastal scenery, the wild beauty of the north coast, the absence of 'civilisation' and relatively calm seas makes a kayaking trip along the north coast one of teh highlights of Cyprus exploration.
Come and experience our Akamas in an environmentally friendly way!
Cyprus Walks Etc offers standard guided walking trips in the area in Akamas. The route is excellent year round, especially for its coastal views and clear blue waters. We would be happy to arrange customised kayaking trips along the north coast or possibly programs that include a combination of walking and kayaking exploration of this beautiful area.
