4.5 km kayaking route between Ayia Napa Sea Caves and Cape Greko Sea Caves
The coast between Glyky Nero beach (just east of the Ayia Napa fishing port) and the south end of Cape Greko peninsula is composed of limestone, with small sandy beaches at certain stretches (Ammos tou Kambouri is probably the prettiest, Limnara beach at about 300 meters is the biggest).
The coastline is characterised by the existence of two groups of sea caves that are major natural attractions on the island of Cyprus.
The Ayia Napa Sea Caves constitute a collection of about ten sea caves with different characteristics. Some have two entrances, some are wide and deep, others are shallow, short or narrow. Together they make a beautiful set of sea caves, on a coast with white sand, that is an excellent stretch to explore (only a few of the caves are safe and easy to enter on a kayak). The set also includes a rocky arch called 'Lovers' bridge' under which it is easy for kayaks to pass.
Some four kilometers further east from the Ayia Napa Sea Caves one finds Cape Greko Sea Caves cove. The locals call this place 'Palaces' because of the 'grand entrances of the caves'. The cove has a collection of more than ten caves, and is a very popular attraction, especially with youngests jumping from a spot on the east side of the cove. The entrances of the caves and very shallow. The caves are not really fit for exploration on kayaks. It is (barely) possible to snorkle inside some of the caves. High at the east end, there is a cave with two entrances, perfect also for photo shoots.
The coast between the two sea cave complexes is very pleasant to explore on a kayak, especially because the sea floor surface is mainly composed of white sand and the sea is usually crystal clear. After about eleven o clock the sea usually gets more choppy.
Very lucky explorers may be blessed to see the elusive monk seal, a rare species in the world (estimated world population is about 700 animals) that lives mainly in the Mediterranean Sea. In Cyprus there are about thirty seals.
We offer two standard trips along this coast, with each one focusing on one of the Sea Cave complexes. Usually we run three-hour guided kayaking trips in the area in our newer sit-inside sea touring kayaks, that perform better under less calm sea conditions.
Cyprus Walks Etc offers different standard guided kayaking trips on sea touring (sit inside) kayaks. We also offer customised kayaking trips (including trips for groups of six on sit-on-top kayaks).
