5.5 km kayaking route between Green Bay and Blue Lagoon along east Cape Greko
The east coast of the free part of Famagusta district (Kapparis, Protaras, Cape Greko) is characterised by long stretches of a limestone rocky coastline, interrupted at places by sandy beaches, some of which are among the best on the island and beyond. Especially Konnos beach and Fig Tree Bay are exquisite, with light blue usually calm clear waters and golden or white sand. Because the sea is usually calm (which means there is no significant erosion caused by waves), we encounter almost no sea caves (however one can find a few in Kapparis). At the same there is a good number of higher elevation caves on the coastline (eg Cyclop's cave), presumably caused by rain and wind.
While the coastline is very pretty to explore on a kayak, the north part is largely built up, which makes exploration less attractive. We focus on the south part of the coastline, from Green Bay to Blue Lagoon in Cape Greko. The distance is about 5.5 km and except for beautiful Konnos beach, it hosts no other natural beaches (there are a couple of tiny artificial ones). Until Konnos beach, the route is rather straight. Lucky kayakers may encounter sea turtles and/or kingfishers if they are lucky and scan the area carefully.
Konnos beach is characterised by the frequent presence of green sea turtles, which are attracted here by Poseidonia seaweed fields, where they graze. In the last few years many day cruiseships come to this spot to show to travellers the sea turtles. At least some people feed turtles (this is illegal) to attract them, which can cause problems to the turtles (including death by propeler strikes).
Further south one finds small Ayioi Anargyroi Cycladic style modern church and the nearby cave sanctuary, a favorite spot for diving schools. The coastline further south has different rock formations and a significant collection of caves above sea level, a few of which have been used for religious purposes. There is also a 'half dome' sea cave south of Ayioi Anargyroi.
Kamara tou Koraka (the 'Crow's arch' in English) is a a rocky arch that has become a major attraction on the coastline. It appears to be in danger of collapsing and is fenced off. In recent times, people have been calling it 'Lovers Bridge' probably for marketing reasons.
Blue Lagoon is also a recent name that was added to the coastline, probably for marketing reasons again. It refers to the coastal waters at the last stretch of east Cape Greko, before the end of the cape. The water here is usually very calm. As winds usually blow from the east or south, the cove is protected from waves. As the sand here is white, the name of 'Blue Lagoon' is appropriate for the spot.
As one can imagine, the coastline is conjested during summer.
Cyprus Walks Etc offers different standard guided kayaking trips on sea touring (sit inside) kayaks. We also offer customised kayaking trips (including trips for groups of six on sit-on-top kayaks).
