Around Lefkara manmade lake - upto10 km walking route
The walking route is on the dirt road that goes around Lefkara manmade lake. It is recommended for people who want to experience the atypical scenery of a (manmade) lake surrounded by (pine) forested slopes on the island of Cyprus. Lefkara, at an altitude of about 350 meters is one of two 'big' higher altitude lakes found in Cyprus (Kannaviou dam at about 400 meters of altitude is the other). Lefkara manmade lake covers upto 650,000 square meters of area and has capacity of nearly 14 million cubic meters of water. The route is great all through the year. In winter the area tends to be greener. In winter and mainly in spring, there are many wild flowers including lavender, typical of the wider area. During summer temperatures are higher and we would only recommend a walk if it is shorter and if travellers start early.
One can easily do a five kilometer walk each way, with nearly continuous view of the lake. Unfortunately there is no walking route all around the lake. Travellers can complete a circular route (at least twenty kilometers long) , without going off road only if they cover a significant stretch west and south of the lake on the paved road.
The walking route around the north east side of Lefkara lake is on a rarely used dirt road with slight ascends and easy. Imposing Kionia peak at an altitude of about 1,400 meters, can be seen on many stretches of the walk.
The walk can easily be combined with a visit to nearby traditional villages, eg Pano Lefkara, Kato Lefkara and Kato Drys. They all preserve the traditional local stone-built architecture and still produced the fine Lefkaritika lace. There are also two wineries in the vicinity.
Cyprus Walks Etc offers standard (one can book under Day Trips from Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca, Ayia Napa and Protaras) and customisable guided walking trips focused on the Lefkara manmade lake walking route. The route is excellent year round (because it is not too long), especially for its vistas. During the hot season, we would recommend a shorter version of this linear back and forth walk, and only if walkers start early. You are welcomed to book with us.
