Service Description

This is a self-guided 14.5 km walk (3 - 4 hours) in Paphos Forest (Platy Valley ending at Kelephos medieval Venetian bridge). Pickup times: 9:00 in Kalopanayiotis - return from Kelephos bridge at 14:30 More info The walk is mainly on forest dirt roads, with a couple of km at the end on an official walking trail. Walkers start at an elevation of more than 900 meters and gradually descend over twelve plus km to under 500 meters. Towards the end there is a nearly 100 meters ascent followed by a slightly larger descent to Kelephos medieval Venetian bridge (found at an elevation of nearly 450 meters). Initially travellers experience more open spaces, mainly pine trees and some views of peaks. Platy means wide in Greek and when they descend after a few kilometers close to the river, the scenery and vegetation change. Platy Valley is a serene place, with a stream that has water all year round. There is a plethora of local plant species, dominated by plane and alder trees, around the riverbed. One can also see pines, bracken, storax, maple, even figs. In early autumn Cyclamen bloom here. Lucky travellers may spot crabs walking on the road or the elusive protected moufflon. Unfortunately they are likely to meet a few cars using this road (especially during the hot season). Nearly six km from the start, one passes by Komitidjis picnic site. The scenery changes considerably with the season (as most valley trees are deciduous). According to legend, the last part (trail) of the route was used by camel caravans in medieval times. It passes via Kelephos medieval Venetian bridge, where the walk ends. It is probably the most photographed of the medieval bridges of Cyprus, and a lovely spot to visit year round (some times water runs out in August). Transportation: A private taxi to the start and from the end of the walk (at Kelephos bridge). What's included? Taxi on default times from/to the Marathasa valley to the start and from the end of the walking route. GPS file with the route as well as a pdf file with information on the route.
