Magnificent Bellapais Abbey and imposing Pentadactylos peaks
This walk starts at the magnificent Bellapais Abbey and initially ascends the slope (south direction) and then goes east towards Voufavento castle (not visible from the usual walking route) and Pentadactylos peak before returning on the circular route. The vegetation is dominated by pine and cypress trees (wild olives, strawberry trees and many mastic bushes can also be seen on the walk).
Throughout much of the walk explorers enjoy glorious views of Pentadactylos mountains rugged peaks as well as of the north coast of Cyprus (including Kyreneia castle). The usual circular route is about 12 km long. It is possible to extend the route towards the east. The extension is on a linear route - initially on a dirt road and consequently on a trail. An extension to Voufavento castle, at 20-km long is possible but may become difficult for many walkers when one includes the ascent to the castle and because a part of the extension is on a relatively tough and hard to find walking trail. The walk may be combined with a visit to exquisite medieval Bellapais Abbey. It can be customised to include other extraordinary attractions in the area including St. Hilarion castle and/or Kyreneia castle and Kyreneia port.
