Samaria Gorge Walk - Mountains to coast
This is a very attractive walk inside one of the longest gorges in Europe. The walk starts at an elevation of 1,200 m and finally reaches the coast after a distance of 16 km (the last three km are out of the gorge). Samaria Gorge is surrounded by a good number of peaks that have elevation(s) of more than 2,000 m. The vegetation is dominated by cypress trees initially (some are huge) and later on by pine (with plane trees at certain parts). The view is breathtaking. There is excellent infrastructure along the way in the form of restrooms, water springs and resting areas. One should keep in mind that walking in the gorge is very popular. As a result one is in the company of many other explorers along the way. Walkers may encounter "tamed" "krikri", the wild goats of Crete.
Cyprus Walks Etc usually organises these expeditions as three overnights trips in case there is a rainy day (the Gorge is open from May to October but possibly closes on a rainy day). As a rule the day that we do not walk the Samaria Gorge we visit Balos beach, a gorgeous place, and other nearby attractions (eg. Elafonissi beach).
