A 2-day (2 night) Guided trip around Akamas of short(er) walks - average abt 8 km per day
This is a two-days (two nights) single accommodation walking trip around the Laona Plateau and beautiful Akamas, the legendary playground of Aphrodite, the Greek Goddess of love and beauty. The route goes also through some of the picturesque stone-built villages on the Laona plateau, presenting the traveller with elements of the island's cultural heritage (not least of which is its cuisine).
The route is offered all year round and is customisable.
Climate - sea water temperature
Please check the relevant climate and sea water temperature information. During the hot season, many people would find walking on the island uncomfortable. However the fact that the route is largely on a ridge and a plateau, as well as near the north west coast, means that it is cooler. Also because the daily length is not very long means that it could be managed in summer to avoid much of the hottest time of the day. While in late autumn, winter and spring the scenery may be greener, summer has also significant green tones in the form of vineyards, olive, carob orchards and juniper bushes near the coast. In summer and autumn the sea water temperatures are higher and those explorers into snorkelling may be blessed with spotting some of the thousands of sea turtles that visit Cyprus during the warm season to feed and reproduce.

The itinerary (summary)

Day 2 - Do the walk around Kritou Terra village
Day 3 - Do the Aphrodite Trail walk - leave the hotel (may be able to offer a free ride)
Detailed Itinerary
On Day 1 the explorers arrive at the hotel. For those who do not have transportation, we can arrange taxi transportation (for the relevant fee). In some cases we may be able, if time arrangements work, to offer a free ride in our company car (which holds teh usual private insurance).
On Day 2 weexplore on foot the eastern slope of the Laona Plateau. The default version of the route starts at the stone built Kritou Terra village, pretty and well preserved, home to the first casino on the island, from just before 1900. Th walking route passes by the waterfall of Kremmiotis and the medieval tiny Agia Paraskevi chapel (the adjacent watermill and gorge, as well as a number of catacombs). If walkers prefer, we can easily do a longer walk that starts from (and ends at) Droushia village (total length of a bit over 14 km). |
On Day 3 we do a guided walk centered around the north coast of Akamas. The route constitutes one of the very best on the whole Cyprus. We pass by the ruins of a medieval monastery and a huge old oak tree. The route ascends onto the imposing Moutti Tis Sotiras peak, from where walkers enjoy glorious views of the north west, and of the north coast, all the way to Pomos village in the north east. The descent from the peak is for many walkers a huge highlight of the whole trip. The stretch on the coastal dirt road next to cliffs also offers lovely views. Walkers leave Akamas from small yet mythical Baths of Aphrodite cave.
|
If the participants prefer, we can do a different (longer version of the route), eg incorporate the east stretch of Adonis trail, and/or extend the walk on the coastal road towards the west to one of the lovely covers and back.
The program ends on Day 3. We can arrange taxi transportation if required. We can also possibly offer a free ride to participants in our company car (that holds a private insurance).
